neglecting your neck

Skincare shouldn’t stop at the jawline

Nothing gives your private number away faster than your neck. Did you know that it ages more quickly than your face (or rest of your body)? Here’s 3 main reasons why. . .

1. The skin on your neck is different than the skin on the rest of your body, face included
The skin of your neck is thinnerThe dermis, the layer that contains collagen, is very thin, making it delicate and more prone to aging than other parts of the body.
The skin of your neck has fewer melanocytes: They’re the cells that produce melanin, our natural defence against UV rays.
The skin of your neck has fewer sebaceous (oil) glands: They pump out the sebum (oil) that keeps skin naturally soft and hydrated.

2. Exposure to the Elements

Cumulative sun exposure over a lifetime has  always been the main culprit of premature aging on your neck and chest because we tend to neglect applying sunscreen to those areas.

Your neck can’t produce all the sebum and melanin it needs to face the elements it’s exposed to and that’s why it’s more prone to sun and environmental damage that make it age a lot faster so be sure to extend your sunscreen beyond your face. Wear sunscreen on your neck and chest.

3. Our Cell Phones

These days, we are looking down at phones or laptops all day long. This repeated motion of looking down can cause tech neck- wrinkles and creases in the neck. Try: to limit the range of motion, so you don’t stretch the skin and bring your cell phone up towards your face instead of moving your neck to look down at it. Neck skin is thin and doesn’t have the healing capacity of other parts of the body, prevention is key.

Taking care of your neck is a lot easier than you think

Simply extend your usual skincare regime to your neck too. When you cleanse your face, cleanse your neck also. When you apply toner on your face, pat some on your neck as well. Do the same with serum, moisturizer, mask, exfoliator, sunscreen and anything else you use (click here for our fav Neck products).  Plus, apply products in an upward direction. This helps fight against gravity and encourages lifting. All this adds just a few more seconds to your routine

The takeaway

Your neck is a sensitive area with thin skin that's regularly exposed to sun and movement and because of this, it is a common place to get wrinkles. However, mindful movements, using SPF and products like these below will give your neck everything it needs to feel and look its best.
